What Zombie has forgotten, though, is that the films he fetishises could be innovative, cathartic and socially aware, whereas his own rehash, about a family of serial-killing hillbillies on the run, offers us sadism followed by more sadism with none of those redeeming qualities.Herbie: Fully Loaded (U)At the start of Herbie: Fully Loaded, Disney's iconic VW Beetle is literally on the scrapheap. While Thomas Vinterberg, the maker of Festen, loads the film with sepia-toned, cinematic style, it's scripted by Lars von Trier in the high-flown allegorical manner he employed in Dogville. Its literary artifice will have some viewers reaching for their revolvers, but von Trier's writing has the kind of richness, elegance and integrity that you don't often get in films. A timeless but topical all-American fable from two Danes and a Brit. The Devil's Rejects (18)The follow-up to Mr Zombie's debut film, House Of 1000 Corpses, this is another slavish homage to the shock-rocker's favourite 1970s horror flicks. brooding youth to fit in a remote, semi-mythical American setting, he's the man to call.
